Federal authorities announced on Wednesday that they thwarted a planned terrorist attack on the Mall of America in Minneapolis. An 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody following a nearly two-year investigation by the FBI.

During the course of the operation, undercover FBI agents provided the teenager with an assault rifle that he intended to use to carry out the attack. The suspect had been under federal surveillance for the duration of the investigation leading up to the intervention.
