NewzDeputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai says his office is working with authorities in the United States to pursue other individuals implicated in a bribery scheme linked to a power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the government of Ghana. According to him, the collaboration follows the conviction of Ghanaian businessman and former MD of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Asante Kwaku Berko by a United States federal jury in Brooklyn, New York. In a social media post, Justice Srem-Sai said the Attorney-General’s Office is working with its US counterparts to ensure that persons implicated in the alleged scheme are brought to justice.
“The Honourable Attorney-General is working with his United States counterparts to bring to book persons who are implicated in the bribery scheme related to the 2014-2017 power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the Government.” He said the latest efforts follow Asante Kwaku Berko’s conviction on charges relating to the bribery scheme. “This follows ASANTE KWAKU BERKO’s conviction by a United States federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, on charges of conspiracy to violate the United States’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other related laws.” The development brings renewed attention to the controversial power plant contract and the alleged corruption surrounding its development between 2014 and 2017. The Deputy Attorney General did not name the other individuals being pursued or provide details on the specific steps being taken by Ghanaian and US authorities.
However, his statement indicates that the investigation and potential prosecution of other persons linked to the alleged bribery scheme remain ongoing following Berko’s conviction.
