France fire crews face searing heat in battle to contain flames

Southern Europe is currently battling severe wildfires fueled by a punishing combination of extreme heat, drought, and strong winds. In southwest France, an uncontained blaze in the Gironde region has grown to four times the size of Paris, threatening to surge further on Wednesday amid searing temperatures.

Emergency response efforts are underway across the affected areas. In France, fire crews including aerial support from three Canadair aircraft have been deployed to drop thousands of gallons of water on the thick plumes of smoke. Meanwhile, some local residents and volunteers in the Gironde region have refused to heed evacuation orders to protect their local forests.

The crisis extends beyond French borders, tragically impacting emergency personnel elsewhere in the region. Two firefighters have died in Greece as crews across Southern Europe continue to confront the relentless fires.
