France's constitutional authority strikes down social media ban for under-15s

France's Constitutional Council has struck down a proposed piece of legislation that sought to ban social media use for children under the age of 15. The authority ruled on Friday that Article 1 of the draft law represented an infringement on the freedom of expression and communication for minors that was neither appropriate, necessary, nor proportionate.

Following the ruling, President Emmanuel Macron directed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to revise the draft legislation to address the constitutional concerns raised by the council. The legislation had originally aimed to restrict social media access for adolescents before being halted by the nation's highest constitutional authority.
