From Gimme-Me-Bit to greatness

PATRICIA Rodney grew up in the quiet farming district of Gimme-Me-Bit, Clarendon, where her life was never defined by material wealth. Instead, it was shaped by resilience, faith, hard work, and a community that believed in lifting one another through life’s greatest challenges. Today, the second-year media and communications student at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is writing a new chapter as a 2025 JWN Foundation Scholar, proving that with determination one can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.

Her story is not only one of academic achievement but also of extraordinary perseverance in the face of serious health challenges, financial hardship, and interrupted schooling. “My community taught me that setbacks are never permanent,” Rodney reflects. “Growing up in Gimme-Me-Bit showed me what resilience looks like.

I watched neighbours support one another through difficult times, and that shaped my values of gratitude, perseverance and service. It also inspired me to succeed so I can return one day as a beacon of hope for young people in my community,” she added. Rodney’s educational journey began at Gimme-Me-Bit Primary and Infant School where she developed a love for learning and an appreciation for education.

She later transitioned to secondary school with dreams of one day attending university. However, those dreams were suddenly threatened during one of the most critical periods of her education. In March 2020, at the beginning of grade 10, Rodney underwent major corrective surgery for scoliosis.

The lengthy recovery coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing her to spend nearly two years away from a traditional classroom learning. For many students, such a disruption could have marked the end of their academic ambitions. However, for Rodney it became the beginning of a remarkable display of resilience.

“I had to rely on self-discipline and determination. I studied whenever my health allowed, and remained focused on my goal of reaching tertiary education,” she said. She is also quick to acknowledge those who made her recovery possible.
