G2K lauds Holness on CPA election

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Generation 2000 (G2K) is congratulating Speaker of the House of Representatives Juliet Holness on her election as vice-chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), describing the achievement as significant for Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Holness was elected during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, becoming the first Jamaican woman to hold the position. Her election also marks Jamaica’s return to the CPA’s leadership, more than three decades after former Speaker of the House, the late Headley Cunningham, served as vice-chairperson from 1992 to 1993.

In a statement on Monday, G2K President Sashana-Lee Edwards said Holness’s election reflected the confidence of parliamentarians across the Commonwealth in her leadership and commitment to parliamentary service. “This is a proud moment for our country and our region. The significant support Mrs Holness received from her Commonwealth colleagues reflects confidence in her leadership, ability and commitment to parliamentary service,” Edwards said.

“On behalf of G2K, I congratulate her and wish her every success in this important role,” she added. Holness’ election follows her tenure as chairperson of the CPA Caribbean, Americas and the Atlantic region. Edwards said her elevation to the association’s leadership could strengthen the region’s voice in international parliamentary affairs.

“Our Caribbean democracies have valuable experience and perspectives to share. Mrs Holness’s election provides an important opportunity to bring the priorities of our region and small states to the forefront of international parliamentary cooperation,” Edwards said. She also pointed to the significance of the appointment for young Jamaicans, particularly women considering careers in public service.

“When a Jamaican woman earns the confidence of parliamentary colleagues across the Commonwealth, it expands the possibilities young people can imagine for themselves. Her achievement is an encouragement to prepare, participate and pursue leadership with purpose,” Edwards said. Holness will serve a one-year term as vice-chairperson and will also sit on the CPA Finance Subcommittee.

According to G2K, her parliamentary experience, combined with her professional background in accounting and finance, will contribute to the work of the subcommittee.
