NewzRafael Villalobos is officially on the job as the new superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.His first day comes as the district faces several challenges, including a proposal to potentially close more than two dozen schools because of declining enrollment.Villalobos says under-enrolled schools can struggle to offer students a wide range of programs.“When you have schools that are under enrolled, there are programs that are lacking that ultimately students are suffering because they are not receiving them,” Villalobos said.He said schools operating at full capacity are more likely to have stronger elective programs, including music, art and physical education.The possible school consolidations are raising concerns among parents.Villalobos says the list of schools being considered for closure is preliminary. A 59-year-old Hollywood man was arrested this past weekend after he allegedly pointed a gun at another driver during a road rage incident that occurred in Dania Beach earlier this year, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.Jail records show Fredi Benjamin Darmon is facing one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Deputies said they responded July 28 to a reported road rage incident in the 1700 block of Stirling Road.The victim told deputies he was driving westbound in the 1200 block of Stirling Road when he was cut off by Darmon, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz, according to an arrest report. The two men argued, and Darmon allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at the victim, the report states.
Deputies said the victim told them he was “100% certain” the object was a gun and that he feared for his life and safety.The victim said he pulled out his cellphone and began recording after Darmon displayed the gun, but he did not capture the entire incident, according to the report.The victim later described the weapon to deputies and flagged down a BSO deputy, the report states.Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the vehicle or Darmon at the time, according to the report.On July 29, the victim identified Darmon from a photo lineup, deputies said.As of Wednesday, he was no longer listed as an inmate in the Broward County jail records system. Police in Miami are investigating after they said a 13-year-old girl was hit by a car.They said it happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Northwest Seventh Street and 12th Avenue.
According to police, officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a crash involving an underage pedestrian.Miami Fire Rescue crews rushed the girl to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in serious but stable condition, authorities said. Police did not say whether the driver would be facing any charges, but did indicate that the investigation remained active and ongoing.
