Govt earmarks RM5mil to spur Bumiputera participation in chipmaking

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government is not trying to replace the existing large electronic firms, but wants to ensure that more Bumiputera companies can be part of the semiconductor industry supply chain.SEBERANG PERAI: The government will allocate RM5 million as part of an initiative to strengthen Bumiputera participation in the semiconductor sector, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the allocation would be used to help enhance the involvement of Bumiputeras in the supply chain of the high-tech sector.He said Penang has become the most prominent semiconductor hub in Southeast Asia, with its vibrant electrical and electronics sector helping Malaysia record continuous economic growth.As the country's semiconductor sector grows, he said, Bumiputera participation needed to be encouraged."We are not trying to replace the existing large firms. But we can ensure that more Bumiputera companies can be part of the semiconductor industry supply chain."I have set aside RM5 million for this Bumiputera semiconductor (initiative) as an initial fund," he said while launching the Penang International Halal Expo 2026 at Politeknik Seberang Perai here.
