Govt may need to step in as Ohakune water crisis deepens

The Ohakune water crisis is deepening following a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Taumarunui on July 25. The seismic event broke pipes that feed raw water to the Ohakune treatment plants, causing the local reservoir to drop to a critically low level of 12%.

As a result of the infrastructure damage and severely depleted water storage, government intervention may become necessary to address the escalating crisis and restore secure water supplies to the affected area.
