Greece Calls Up Sam Konstas Brother For World Cup Qualification

Greece has called up Billy Konstas, the older brother of Australian Test batter Sam Konstas, as the national cricket team begins its surprise campaign to qualify for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup. The Hellenic Cricket Federation (HCF) has included the 24-year-old in Greece’s initial 14-man squad for the European qualifying event in Finland, scheduled from 14 to 21 August. Billy Konstas, who is four years older than Sam, plays grade cricket in Sydney while working as a cricket coach and physiotherapist.

His younger brother Sam made his Test debut for Australia at 19 during the 2024 Boxing Day Test against India, gaining worldwide attention after he repeatedly ramped Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah during his memorable debut innings. Greece’s squad also features another Greek-Australian prospect, 21-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder Blake Faunce, who represented the Australian Capital Territory at junior representative level. The HCF has also opened discussions with other Australian players of Greek heritage, including Blake Nikitaras and Peter Hatzoglou.

Nikitaras, 26, has played first-class cricket for New South Wales and featured in the Big Bash League with the Sydney Thunder. His father Steve previously represented Greece’s national team, appearing at both the beginning and end of his professional playing career. Hatzoglou, 27, would provide significant experience to the Greek side after playing franchise cricket in competitions including The Hundred, the Big Bash League and the Pakistan Super League.

However, Greece has not yet confirmed whether Nikitaras and Hatzoglou will join the squad for the European sub-regional qualifier.
