Greek authorities have ordered a temporary ban on outdoor manual labour and two-wheeled delivery services on Wednesday as an intense heatwave is expected to push temperatures above 40°C. The Labour Ministry said the mandatory work stoppage will apply from 1 p.m. in Attica (including Athens), Thessaly, eastern Central Greece and the eastern Peloponnese — the areas forecast to experience the highest temperatures.
The restrictions cover construction sites, public works, shipyards and other outdoor manual jobs, as well as food and parcel deliveries carried out by motorcycle, scooter or bicycle. Restaurants and stores may continue accepting orders for pickup or delivery by air-conditioned cars and vans. Hospitals, utilities and transport services are exempt as essential infrastructure but must implement additional heat protection measures.
Employers are also required to offer remote work to vulnerable employees where possible. Companies found violating the ban face fines of €2,000 for each employee working during the restricted hours.
