Israel marked the third anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attack on Wednesday with silent tributes, new strikes on Gaza and intense political debate, weeks before elections in which the country’s deadliest day will be front and centre. At the site of the Nova music festival, where Hamas militants in trucks and paragliders opened fire around dawn on October 7, 2023, family members bowed their heads in silence – although at least one instead put on techno music in tribute to the fallen. Greece’s foreign ministry marked three years since the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, which it called a heinous terrorist assault that killed hundreds of civilians and set off a dangerous escalation across the region.

The ministry said the return of the hostages was a relief and a decisive step toward a lasting settlement. It said a permanent ceasefire, and full implementation of the second phase of the 20-point peace plan for Gaza, remain urgent. Athens said it supports humanitarian efforts and a return to the political process toward a two-state solution and the security of Israel, which it called the only viable path to a durable peace in the Middle East, in line with international law and the relevant UN resolutions.
