Family, friends, fellow artists and admirers gathered in Athens to bid a final farewell to Mary Linda, one of Greece’s most celebrated singers, following her death at the age of 91. The funeral service took place at 10:00am at the Church of Saint Andrew, located within the Athens Nursing Home, where the legendary performer had lived since 2018. The venue held special significance, as Mary Linda had expressed her wish for her funeral to be held there.
Her daughter, Evangelia, was among those who attended the emotional service. In accordance with the family’s wishes, mourners were asked to make donations to the Athens Nursing Home instead of sending funeral wreaths, in gratitude for the care and support the institution provided during the singer’s final years. She would often tell me, ‘Play this for Mimis and ask him if I’m singing it correctly,’ or ‘Take me to one of your concerts so I can sing two songs and then bring me back.’ She wasn’t simply born to be a singer—she lived through music. I loved her very much, and she loved me too. May she rest in peace.” Singer Konstantinos Chanias also paid tribute, recalling their collaboration on Mary Linda’s final recording, Promises, released in 2019.
He said she had sensed it might be her last recording, describing the experience as one of the defining moments of his career. Among those attending the funeral were Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, Dimitris Avramopoulos, Loukila Carrer, Vasilis Kapernaros, Manolis Karantinis, Spyros Bibilas, Makis Delaportas, Giannis Bournelis and Kostas Venetsanos.
