Greek Household Disposable Income Rises in First Quarter

Greek households recorded a 3.2% increase in disposable income during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). The disposable income of households and non-profit institutions serving households rose from €37.92 billion in the first quarter of 2025 to €39.13 billion in the first quarter of 2026. At the same time, household final consumption expenditure increased by 4.7%, rising from €38.6 billion to €40.4 billion over the same period.

However, the household savings rate remained negative. The savings rate, calculated as gross savings as a percentage of gross disposable income, stood at -3.3% in the first quarter of 2026, compared with -1.8% in the first quarter of 2025. Private Investment Strengthens ELSTAT’s quarterly non-financial sector accounts also showed growth in private investment.

Gross fixed capital formation by non-financial corporations reached €4.88 billion in the first quarter of 2026. The investment rate, measured as gross fixed capital formation relative to gross value added, increased to 26.2%, compared with 25.4% in the first quarter of 2025. Government Borrowing Increases The General Government sector recorded net borrowing of €1.29 billion in the first quarter of 2026, compared with €0.79 billion during the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, Greece recorded a surplus of €1.31 billion in the external balance of primary incomes, current transfers and capital transfers, compared with a surplus of €3.30 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Economy Records Higher External Borrowing As a result of these developments, the Greek economy recorded net borrowing from abroad of €5.42 billion in the first quarter of 2026. This compared with net borrowing of €4.32 billion during the first quarter of 2025, according to ELSTAT data.
