Greek Islanders Rise Against Over-Tourism and Over-Development

Residents, cultural groups and local organisations in Paros have launched protests against the construction of a five-star hotel complex near Marcello Beach in Parikia, warning that uncontrolled tourism development threatens the island’s natural landscape, water resources and traditional character. The planned hotel development has sparked intense debate across the Cycladic island, with opponents arguing that further large-scale construction could place additional pressure on limited natural resources and permanently alter the environment. Writer Christos Georgousis, a long-time figure in Paros public affairs, addressed a letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which he also shared with the mayors of the Cyclades islands.

In his letter, Georgousis described his emotional reaction after seeing an image of the construction site, saying the scale of the intervention had deeply affected him. “Afterwards, tears came to my eyes. The destruction is so great that it shocked me,” he wrote, arguing that authorities could have chosen a different approach that protected the beach while allowing development elsewhere.

He claimed the project had “destroyed the entire area” on an island with limited space and damaged a landscape that had previously reflected the harmony of the Cycladic environment. “You Are Losing the Islands” Georgousis called on Cyclades mayors and political leaders to take action against what he described as excessive luxury development and disregard for environmental protections. “Save nature and Greece – that must become the first slogan,” he wrote, warning that the islands risk losing their identity because of unchecked expansion.

He also questioned how the infrastructure demands of large tourism projects could affect local resources, particularly water supply. “Where will the water for the 50 pools of this enormous construction come from?” he asked, highlighting water shortages as one of Paros’ most serious challenges. He argued that the development model promoted in recent years had turned land, beaches, history and landscapes into commercial assets.
