Greek paleoanthropologist Professor Katerina Harvati has been awarded the prestigious Albert Einstein World Award for Science 2026, recognising her pioneering contributions to the study of human evolution and the origins of modern humans. The World Cultural Council selected Harvati for one of the world’s most distinguished scientific honours in recognition of research that has transformed scientific understanding of human ancestry. “It is a great recognition of my research and scientific career, but also of my field more broadly,” Harvati told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).

In announcing the award, the World Cultural Council’s interdisciplinary panel praised Harvati for providing compelling scientific evidence that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens represent two distinct human species.
