On September 11, the Government of Guatemala declared a national orange alert across the country due to climatic variability and drought conditions. The measure was enacted by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) as a preparatory level prior to a maximum red alert or emergency.

The decree responds to mounting concerns over food insecurity and potential crop losses driven by ongoing dry conditions. In addition to the national orange alert, the local department of Totonicapán took more severe action by activating a red alert within its jurisdiction.
