Guinea-Bissau’s ousted president to return from exile, run for office

Exiled former president Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau announced he will return to the country to run for office in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 6. Embalo was previously ousted in a military coup in November, which seized power in the perennially unstable and poor West African nation just days after a presidential vote and disrupted the electoral process.

The upcoming December 6 election follows the military intervention that abruptly halted the previous electoral cycle. Embalo revealed his intentions to return from exile during an interview with AFP on Monday, setting the stage for a political comeback in the wake of the recent government overthrow.
