A man died after Hagerstown officers deployed Tasers and shot him during an apartment fire response on Friday. State investigators are reviewing the case. Police shot a man after they were called to assist Hagerstown, Maryland, firefighters at the scene of an apartment fire Friday.
The man was pronounced dead at an area hospital, investigators said. According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, which is investigating the incident, firefighters responded to the fire in the unit block of Randolph Avenue at around 4:50 p.m. They requested police assistance when they found a man inside the apartment.
Hagerstown police set up a perimeter around the house where the apartment was located. “A man ran out of the house in the direction of the officers, and officers gave verbal commands and deployed tasers,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. “HPD officers then discharged their service weapons, striking the man.” Police said they found two knives at the scene.
The officers had body-worn cameras. In addition, the state investigators are requesting cellphone or surveillance camera video from the public. The Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division typically releases the names of people killed and the officers involved in these types of incidents within two business days.
