Hawai‘i reef sounds lured 4 to 14 times more baby fish, study finds

A study conducted in Kāne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i, has demonstrated that broadcasting sounds from thriving coral reefs significantly increases the presence of young fish larvae. Researchers observed that these acoustic recordings attracted four to 14 times more baby fish to specific test sites compared to areas without the sound enhancement.

While the findings represent a potential breakthrough for marine conservation and reef restoration, the study noted that the increased attraction of the larvae was transient. The research highlights the role of soundscapes in the development and settlement patterns of juvenile reef fish.
