Health officials urge caution for Gulf Coast beachgoers during surge of deadly bacterial infections

Health officials in Louisiana are advising beachgoers to exercise caution following a seasonal surge in Vibrio vulnificus infections. The bacteria, often described as flesh-eating, is naturally present in coastal waters and has prompted public health warnings across the Gulf Coast region.

State health authorities confirmed nine cases of the infection in Louisiana this year. All nine individuals required hospitalization, and five of the cases resulted in fatalities. Officials are emphasizing the need for preventative measures to mitigate risks while visiting coastal areas during the summer months.
