HIGHLANDERS Football Club has been plunged into mourning following a tragic road traffic accident along the Gweru-Bulawayo Highway in which three senior club officials died. The officials have been identified as club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza. They were involved in the accident near Lochard, about 60 kilometres from Bulawayo, while travelling from Kariba, where Highlanders had played ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match on Wednesday.

According to witnesses at the scene, the vehicle carrying the three officials allegedly struck a cow that had strayed onto the highway before veering into the path of an oncoming bus, resulting in a multi-vehicle head-on collision. Mhlophe was elected Highlanders chairman in February 2024 together with his executive committee, marking his second stint at the helm of the Bulawayo giants after previously serving from 2018 to 2021. “Zimbabwean football has lost three devoted servants whose passion and commitment helped shape one of our nation’s greatest football institutions,” said ZIFA president, Nqobile Magwizi.

“We are devastated by this heartbreaking tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Kenneth Mhlophe, Fiso Siziba and Nkani Khoza as well as the entire Highlanders family. “It is especially painful that this loss comes during Highlanders’ centenary year, a time that should have been filled with celebration and reflection on a remarkable legacy. Instead, the football family is united in mourning.” Police are expected to release further details once investigations at the scene have been concluded.
