Adolf Hitler was born on 20 April 1889 in a rented apartment in the building and spent the early weeks of his life there before his family relocated to Passau in southern Germany. The government repurposed the 17th century building in hopes of preventing the site from becoming an attraction for Nazi sympathizers.
