UN: El Niño will add 16 million people to the food insecurity in Latin America

The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that the climatic phenomenon El Niño will significantly worsen food insecurity across Latin America and globally. According to regional director Lena Savelli, the impact of El Niño on crop yields is projected to push an additional 16 million people into food insecurity within Latin America, contributing to a global total of 49 million affected individuals.

At the country level, the crisis poses a severe threat to Honduras, where approximately 500,000 additional people could fall into food insecurity due to the combined effects of El Niño and ongoing drought conditions. The warnings were highlighted during Savelli's official visit to the country to assess the potential impacts on vulnerable families.
