Democrats block proposed constitutional amendment to keep Supreme Court justices to nine

The U.S. House of Representatives rejected a Republican-led proposal to amend the Constitution to permanently cap the number of Supreme Court justices at nine. The measure failed to secure the required two-thirds supermajority necessary for a constitutional amendment, with the final vote falling along party lines.

The failed proposal was intended to prevent future legislative efforts to expand the size of the high court. Because the vote did not meet the constitutional threshold for passage, the amendment will not proceed to the Senate.
