Hungary’s PM announces closure of nuclear plant due to heatwave

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the shutdown of the country’s sole nuclear power plant, the MVM Paks facility, on Sunday. The closure was necessitated by record-low water levels in the Danube River, which prevented the plant from maintaining standard operations during an ongoing heatwave.

The Paks facility is a critical component of Hungary’s national infrastructure, typically generating approximately one-third of the country's electricity. This shutdown represents a significant development in the broader energy crisis currently affecting Europe, where prolonged drought and extreme temperatures have increasingly disrupted power production.
