In Malaysia, a mother’s love offers her trans daughter refuge

In a village near Kota Bharu, located in Malaysia’s conservative northeastern state of Kelantan, a mother named Rozi provides refuge to her transgender daughter, Hana. Despite societal pressures in the deeply conservative region, Rozi has learned to disregard public criticism regarding her child.

Rozi recognized for years that Hana was different, noting that during childhood, Hana preferred wearing girls' clothing and spent the majority of her time with girls.
