Mayangna indigenous people of Nicaragua denounce repression, dispossession and mining expansion at the UN

Nicaraguan Mayagna indigenous leader Lusben Taylor addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday to denounce a severe crisis affecting her people. Speaking from San José, Taylor reported that the Mayagna community in Nicaragua is currently suffering from systematic violence, arbitrary detentions, and the forceful dispossession of their ancestral lands.

In addition to human rights abuses and state repression, Taylor highlighted the escalating threat of mining expansion within indigenous territories. Her testimony before the international body draws attention to the ongoing vulnerability of indigenous populations amid intensifying resource extraction and socio-political turmoil in Nicaragua.
