Indonesia cancels flights at Jakarta airport and others as Anak Krakatau volcano erupts

Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupted early Sunday, sending volcanic ash across parts of western Indonesia and prompting widespread flight cancellations and airport closures. Authorities initially closed multiple domestic facilities before raising the total number of closed airports to eight.

Among the disruptions, all flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were cancelled. According to the country's transport minister, the volcanic ash was detected moving east at 5 knots at an altitude of 15,000 feet, shifting direction after winds had earlier carried the debris west toward the Indian Ocean.
