(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: The Ipoh city council has denied claims that Chinese characters have been placed beside the city’s iconic hillside “IPOH” sign, saying the widely circulated image was likely generated using artificial intelligence. The council said the image was posted in a Facebook group accompanied by a claim that Ipoh is beginning to resemble “a district of Beijing”.
“The circulation of this image is irresponsible, misleading, and could cause public concern and confusion. “It could also be considered defamatory and could potentially affect Ipoh city’s image, harmony, and reputation,” it said in a statement. The council said it is investigating the matter and would not rule out lodging reports with the authorities against those involved in creating or spreading the image.
The council said the sign had been removed from the limestone hill near Jalan Kuala Kangsar, which is visible from the North-South Expressway, on July 15 for inspection, repair and restoration works. It is expected to be reinstalled in stages from Aug 4 to 6, subject to weather conditions and the progress of work at the site.
