Iran-backed Houthi rebels have taken over a port city in Yemen vital to control of Red Sea shipping, two officials say

On Thursday, Iran-backed Houthi rebels took control of the strategic port city of Mokha in Yemen, according to Houthi and Yemeni officials. The city is located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital waterway connecting to the Red Sea.

The takeover of Mokha significantly raises the threat to international Red Sea shipping lanes. By securing this port, the Iran-backed rebel group gains an additional potential point of leverage amid the ongoing conflict.
