In recent years, a new generation of event promoters have emerged on the party scene, adding to night-time entertainment offerings. But even though some of these promoters have been hosting successful events, there are some challenges that come with the territory. Kyle Chin said securing dates and identifying an appropriate venue remain challenges.
“I got into event promotion as a youth, just by helping my older cousins promote their event in St Elizabeth about ten years ago. Officially, I have been doing my own events for the past three years,” he told the Jamaica Observer. Known for Socaverse and B43, he added: “The cost of getting the permits to actually keep the event is also of concern as well as the high taxes that promoters face.” Kyle Chin, host of Socaverse and B43.
Chin’s events target the 18 and older demographic. Socaverse is a soca/EDM music event and is held twice annually while B43 is held monthly. “What sets us apart and what we are bringing to nightlife is the experience.
We cater to individuals with the different genres that are played and the type of setup we use,” said Chin who works as a corporate broker. Popular teenage disc jock DJ Zacky, who hosts the bi-weekly SATDEHZ, which is held at Oceano, says he would like to see more support from corporate Jamaica for promoters. “...I’d like to see more support for young promoters through sponsorship opportunities, easier access to venues, and stronger partnerships...
I believe that there can be more collaboration within the entertainment industry. Better regulation and security support would also help events operate more efficiently,” said DJ Zacky. “[P]eople don’t always take you seriously until you’ve built a name for yourself.
But as our events continue to prove themselves, and our attendance keeps growing, you can see people starting to view us differently and put more respect on our name. That journey has motivated us to keep raising the standard with every event,” DJ Zacky shared. He revealed that his passion for entertainment and creating memorable experiences were what drew him to event promotion.
