It will take more than legislation to give Springfield students a better chance | Milton Reach

Recent articles and commentary in The Republican have highlighted the segregation and poverty in the Springfield area’s most challenged communities as principal explanations for discouraging educational and other outcomes, often accompanied by proposals for yet more government mandates as the remedy. Government has important roles to play, but after decades and billions of dollars spent on schools, busing, inner city housing and countless other initiatives, it’s time to ask whether something more fundamental is also required.
