NewzA 69-year-old Italian man has been sentenced after constructing a homemade amphitheatre near Vicenza and passing it off as genuine ancient Roman ruins for nearly a decade. Franco Malosso von Rosenfranz claimed the structure was a “sensational discovery” revealed by a landslide. He told visitors that Julius Caesar and Cleopatra had once visited the site and charged €40 per tour.
The fake ruins were convincing enough to appear in some guidebooks. The fraud was exposed following an investigation by police and archaeologists. A court sentenced Malosso von Rosenfranz to two-and-a-half years in prison and ordered him to pay the local municipality €560,000.
