NewzJAMAICA is set to introduce a new dimension to its sport tourism offering with the inaugural Jamaica Ultimate Athlete Challenge (JUAC), scheduled for November 19-22 this year. The main race day will take place on Saturday, November 21. With 100 days to go, as of August 11, the JUAC is being developed as a pilot adventure sport tourism event designed to test the potential of a distinctly Jamaican multi-discipline athletic competition that combines sport, entertainment, tourism and television production.
Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron, president of the Jamaica Obstacle Sport Federation (JOSF) and chairman of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica’s Sports & Entertainment Development Committee, is serving as project co-leader for the initiative. Cameron has teamed up with Carole Beckford and Kerry-Ann Jones to execute this event. The JUAC will bring together Jamaican, regional and international competitors, alongside specially selected Jamaican corporate teams, creating a competition that is designed to test athletic ability, endurance, strategy, teamwork and adaptability.
“Jamaica has the natural environment, the sporting talent, the creative capacity and the international appeal to develop major sport tourism properties of its own,” said Cameron. “The JUAC is an opportunity to bring those elements together in one event and create a sustainable Jamaican-owned adventure sport property with regional and international appeal.” The JUAC format will feature eight activities incorporated into a demanding multi-stage two-kilometre course. The competition is intentionally designed to move beyond traditional sporting disciplines, requiring participants to demonstrate a combination of physical fitness, endurance, speed, coordination, mental toughness and tactical decision-making.
The inaugural event will be staged at Tru-Juice Farms, St Catherine, providing a distinctive Jamaican outdoor environment that will also become an important part of the television and tourism experience.
