Japan returns wrongly collected remains to Kazakhstan and Myanmar

Japan has returned human remains that were mistakenly collected to the governments of Kazakhstan and Myanmar. The repatriation process was initiated following a 2019 discovery revealing that the remains of foreign nationals had been mixed up with those of Japanese individuals who had been detained in Russia following World War II.

The misidentification incident brought to light historical administrative errors regarding the handling and identification of remains recovered from former detention sites, prompting the Japanese government to correct the misallocations and return the remains to their respective countries of origin.
