Japanese archaeological missions to return to Iraq for excavations and training

Japanese archaeological excavation teams are preparing to return to Iraq to conduct scientific digs and provide hands-on field training for local researchers. The initiative, announced on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by Dr. Laith Majeed Hussein, marks a resumption of cooperative archaeological efforts between Japan and Iraq.

The missions will focus on both active excavation work and capacity building for Iraqi researchers through practical field training.
