Japanese population below 120 million for first time in decades

The number of Japanese citizens residing in Japan has fallen below 120 million for the first time in decades. Official data indicates that the population of Japanese nationals declined by 0.76% during the most recent reporting period.

While the count of Japanese citizens has decreased, the total population of the country remains at 123.8 million when including foreign residents. This figure is supported by a 9.62% increase in the number of foreign nationals living in Japan, which partially offsets the broader decline in the domestic population.
