Judge ends federal oversight of Oakland police department after 23 years

On Tuesday afternoon, U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick issued a ruling ending federal monitoring and court oversight of the Oakland Police Department. The decision concludes 23 years of federal intervention in the department, marking the longest-running police oversight in U.S. history.

Federal oversight of the agency originally began in 2003. Tuesday's ruling at the court hearing terminates the monitoring that has governed the department for more than two decades.
