(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: National men’s singles shuttler Cheam June Wei booked a semi-final berth at the Korea Masters after defeating a higher-ranked Taiwanese opponent in a three-game quarter-final match today.Ranked world No 72, June Wei achieved a career-best result by reaching the semi-final of a World Tour Super 300 tournament for the first time after defeating world No 42 Su Li Yang 23-21, 10-21, 21-18 in a 67-minute match at the Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium in Asan, South Korea.He will face either China's Hu Zhe An or Zhu Xuan Chen in the semi-final tomorrow. Both players are ranked higher than June Wei, who has yet to face either of them.June Wei previously reached the finals of World Tour Super 100 tournaments twice, finishing as runner-up on both occasions.Separately, another new men’s doubles pair, Soh Wooi Yik-Man Wei Chong, defeated India’s Krishna Prasad Garaga-Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy to become the second pair to enter the last-four stage in the category.The Malaysians won 21-7, 21-8 in 25 minutes and will face Japanese pair Haruki Kawabe-Kenta Matsukawa in the semi-final.Earlier, Tee Kai Wun-Yap Roy King booked their semi-final spot by defeating compatriots Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s month-old men’s doubles pair Tee Kai Wun-Yap Roy King stormed into the semi-finals of the Korea Masters after defeating compatriots Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai in straight games. Kai Wun-Roy King, who are only playing in their third tournament together, won 21-12, 21-15 in just 28 minutes in their quarter-final match at the Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium in Asan, South Korea.
The duo were knocked out in the opening rounds of their previous two tournaments -- the Taipei Open and China Masters. Chia-Tai were runners-up at last week’s Taipei Open. Their semi-final opponents will be either Japan’s Shuji Sawada-Daigo Tanioka or Taiwan’s He Zhi Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan.
Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Malaysia in the mixed doubles event, with all three remaining pairs failing to reach the last four. New pair Chen Tang Jie-Clarissa San saw their run ended by Japan’s Haruki Kawabe-Kokona Ishikawa, who won 22-20, 21-17 in 35 minutes. Tang Jie was paired with Clarissa after his regular partner, Toh Ee Wei, underwent knee surgery.
Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin, who staged a remarkable comeback in yesterday’s last-16 match after saving three match points, lost to top Korean pair Kim Jae Hyeon-Jang Ha Jeong 17-21, 18-21 in 43 minutes. Loo Bing Kun-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, who had shown promise in the earlier rounds, lost to Chinese pair Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying 14-21, 15-21 in 31 minutes.
