Chile marks 53 years since the coup against Allende without a tribute for the first time in its democratic history

On Friday, Chile marked the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 military coup that overthrew the government of Salvador Allende and led to 17 years of military dictatorship. For the first time in the country's democratic era, the anniversary was observed without an official tribute.

During the anniversary, Chilean President José Antonio Kast called upon citizens to look toward the future. Kast stated that the population cannot remain "condemned" by the nation's historical events.
