Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to stand down as MP to focus on world affairs

Sir Keir Starmer has announced his departure from the House of Commons, stepping down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras just months after leaving Downing Street. The decision sets the stage for an imminent by-election in central London and marks the final chapter of a turbulent parliamentary career for the former Labour leader. Shifting Focus to Global Horizons Reflecting on his departure, Starmer told local media that he had decided over the summer to pivot toward global issues.

He noted that the transition felt natural after serving as head of government. “I think once you’ve been prime minister, it’s important to answer the question: what are you going to do next? Having decided I’m going to concentrate on international affairs, I think it’s right to step down,” Starmer said.

He added that it had been a “huge honour and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country and to have taken over from Frank Dobson, who was such a great constituency MP and a member of the last Labour government.” Starmer outlined his future professional path, emphasising that his attention would turn outward. “I will now focus on other things, and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Starmer stated. Alongside global policy, he intends to maintain long-standing advocacy work.

“I will also continue, as I have done for a long time now with others, to work on combating violence against women and girls; that is an issue that matters to me hugely. It’s work I started before I became an MP and it’s work I’m keen to continue after I’m an MP.
