World Athletics Championships to be staged in Africa for the first time with Nairobi as host

Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the global track and field event will be staged in Africa. World Athletics announced the decision on Tuesday, noting that the Kenyan capital successfully competed against bids from London, Munich, and Rome. Additionally, track and field's governing body announced that Munich will host the subsequent championships in 2031.

The selection of Nairobi represents a historic milestone for the continent, providing Africa with the opportunity to host the sport's largest event outside of the Olympics after decades of African athletes setting records in international competition.
