Konstantinos Karetsas’ move to Borussia Dortmund represents more than another high-profile transfer abroad. It continues a proud tradition of Greek footballers who have built outstanding careers in Germany, where many not only competed at the highest level but also left a lasting legacy. The Bundesliga has long provided fertile ground for Greek talent.
Since the 1990s, several Greek internationals have captured titles, earned individual honours and established themselves as key figures for their clubs. Although Karetsas ranks among Greece’s brightest young prospects, the 18-year-old will need to earn his place in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues. Many Greek players have already enjoyed exceptional careers in Germany, and the young international now has the opportunity to follow in their footsteps.
Angelos Charisteas remains one of the country’s greatest Bundesliga success stories. Before becoming Greece’s hero at UEFA Euro 2004, Charisteas helped Werder Bremen secure a historic league and German Cup double during the 2003-04 season. He remains the only Greek footballer to win the Bundesliga title.
Fanis Gekas etched his name into German football history a few years later. Playing for Bochum during the 2006-07 campaign, he scored 20 goals to finish as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer, becoming the first—and still only—Greek player to win the league’s Golden Boot. Giannis Amanatidis also enjoyed a distinguished career in Germany, becoming captain and a central figure at Eintracht Frankfurt.
With nearly 200 Bundesliga appearances, he ranks among the most successful Greek footballers to play in the competition. Sokratis Papastathopoulos built an outstanding reputation during his five seasons at Borussia Dortmund between 2013 and 2018. The commanding defender won two German Super Cups, played in a UEFA Champions League final and established himself among the Bundesliga’s elite defenders.
Kyriakos Papadopoulos also made a significant impact after breaking into Schalke’s first team at a young age before continuing his career with Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg. He finished with more than 150 Bundesliga appearances. Kostas Stafylidis also enjoyed a lengthy career in Germany, representing four different Bundesliga clubs.
