The Yasukuni Shrine is frequently a point of diplomatic tension, as it honors Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals from World War II. Visits by Japanese officials to the shrine are often viewed critically by neighboring nations, particularly China and South Korea, who perceive them as a glorification of Japan's imperialist past.
