Researchers led by environmental scientist Chengzhen Zhou of Peking University have found that the Antarctic continent is transforming into a source of mercury pollution driven by global warming. Long regarded as a pristine refuge isolated from industrial contamination, the region is now experiencing a dramatic environmental shift.

The findings highlight how climate change is actively altering ecosystems traditionally viewed as untouched by human-generated pollutants, presenting new challenges for environmental conservation and monitoring in polar regions.
