The Spanish Congress is currently evaluating a proposed modification to the country's assisted reproduction law. The legislative initiative aims to address existing gender disparities in the regulations governing the management and destruction of cryopreserved gametes.

Under the current legal framework, men can relatively easily decide to discard their stored gametes. In contrast, women face significantly stricter regulatory hurdles to make the same decision, as their choice currently requires clearance from two separate medical reports.

Proponents of the reform argue that the present legislation is outdated and creates obstacles to the efficient management of cryopreservation. The proposed changes seek to establish a more equitable legal standard for both men and women regarding reproductive autonomy.
