Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup, one of the Kuril Islands, marking his first visit to the territory that is currently under Russian administration but claimed by Japan. During the visit, Putin addressed Russian sailors, characterizing their role as being on the front lines of a conflict.

The visit has prompted a new diplomatic dispute between Russia and Japan. Prior to his arrival on the islands, the Russian president issued a warning from Sakhalin, stating that Russia would respond to actions taken by European countries regarding the ongoing geopolitical situation.
