The Government says that the extension for Almaraz "does not alter" the date for the definitive closure of Spain's nuclear power plants in 2035.

The Spanish government has authorized the extension of the Almaraz nuclear power plant's operational permit until June 2030. Officials stated that this decision is based on safety assessments and the facility's role in maintaining a secure energy supply, noting that the extension carries no additional cost for citizens. The government emphasized that this specific authorization does not change the national policy to phase out all nuclear power plants in Spain by 2035.

The Association of Municipalities in Areas of Nuclear Power Plants (Amac) expressed support for the extension, welcoming the government's decision regarding the two reactors in Extremadura. The move ensures the continued operation of the plant within the established regulatory framework while maintaining the broader timeline for the country's nuclear energy transition.
