The closure, which began at 22:00 on Thursday, disrupted travel for individuals participating in the Operación Paso del Estrecho (OPE), leaving thousands trapped without a confirmed reopening date as safety concerns persist.

Authorities opened a nearby pavilion in Melilla to accommodate the stranded travelers. During the ongoing border closure and security operations, gunfire and detonations were reported at the frontier. Meanwhile, the migration crisis in Ceuta prompted the Italian government to temporarily suspend the Schengen agreement with Spain and activate border controls to safeguard security.
